CHAPTER 30

The large Super Stallion helicopter bounced in turbulence as it swooped, tree top level, above the southwestern landscape. The jolt yanked Mason from the short nap he’d been taking after speaking to his old platoon sergeant. He opened an eye and spotted Specialist Molles still sleeping like a baby, oblivious of the turbulence. Mason was envious of the young soldier; wishing he could sleep like that.

The crew chief stepped from the flight deck and held up four fingers. “Four minutes!” he yelled over the roar of the engine.

Mason threw him a thumb and nodded. He leaned toward Lindquist. “Get the guys ready. We hit the ground, I want these two choppers secured tighter than a clam’s ass at high tide!”

“Yes, sir!” Lindquist replied.

Mason watched Lindquist rouse the men. He repeated the captain’s order, and in less than two minutes they were standing ready to exit the helicopter. Looking out the window, open prairies and gentle rolling hills greeted Mason’s teams as the pilots slowed the aircraft over the airport. When the twin helicopters landed in the middle of the airport’s two-mile runway, Lindquist barked orders for the team to disembark. In less than three seconds after touching down, the team sprang into action, forming a perimeter around the two aircrafts.

Mason stepped from the King Stallion, surveying the airfield. His first thought was that Captain Rowland was right: the airfield left plenty of room to spot zeeks at a distance. Stepping between the two helicopters, Mason watched the two crew chiefs hustle about, connecting the fuel hoses. In a short span of time after touching down, they began pumping the fuel.

Mason pulled the map from his pocket and unfolded it. He compared the instructions he’d gathered from Cliff Daniels and plotted his location on the map. After locating his location and mentally measuring the distance, he shook his head. Daniels was south of their location by five to ten miles. With their limited fuel supply, he couldn’t risk the extra mileage just to see someone he didn’t care to see.

Mason looked up from his map. “How long will this take?” he asked the crew chief.

He watched the chief place his hand on the hose regulator and stare into the distance. He was about to repeat his question until he realized the crew chief was feeling the flow in the hose.

After a few seconds, the chief replied, “About an hour, sir.”

Mason nodded. He turned to find Sergeant Lindquist kneeling twenty yards from the nose of the aircraft. He made his way to his second in command and studied the perimeter Lindquist had put into place. He knelt next to him and said, “We got an hour to wait.”

“Oh, is that all? Well, the guys are rested up so this shouldn’t be an issue.”

“Keep your eyes peeled. We have no intel on how many zee heads are around. If it gets hairy, we’ll evac and worry about fuel later,” Mason explained.

“Roger that, sir.”

“In the meantime, keep your eyes open.”
